When you touch down at Tirana International Airport (TIA), you’re just moments away from discovering the heart of Albania. Here’s what you need to know to make your arrival as smooth as the silky Dhallë you’ll enjoy later.

The Landing Experience

View from plane window on runway at Tirana International Airport.

Upon landing at Tirana International Airport, you’ll exit the aircraft and enter the airport through one of its two jetways. The process is straightforward, but here are some pointers:

  • Buses: Over 50% of the time when I land in Rinas Airport, buses are needed to reach the arrivals and passport control area. (So no need to rush off the plane, the buses take everyone in groups.)
  • Passport Control: After a short walk or bus ride, you’ll reach passport control. The lines are typically very short. For some passport holders, eGates are available (automated border control) and you can be through with just a quick scan.
  • Baggage Claim: Your luggage awaits you right after border control. Keep an eye on the screens to spot your flight number.
    • I’d recommend waiting to exchange money until you get into Tirana and can visit a no-commission exchange.

The coolest thing about landing in Tirana? No stairs! Everything happens on the same ground floor.

Getting to Tirana from TIA

Once you’ve collected your bags:

  • Taxis: A taxi ride to downtown Tirana takes about 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic, which can be as unpredictable as the Blloku nightlife. The ride can cost around 1000-3000 ALL.
    • If you’re looking for an smooth App Experience, Patoko allows you to book a taxi, see prices, and even pay via card from within a single app.
  • Private Transfers: Booking in advance with a service like Patoko ensures you’ll be picked up right at arrivals. The cost is similar but with the added comfort of knowing your ride is waiting.
  • Public Transport: For the budget traveler, there’s a bus by Luna that takes you to the city center for about 400 ALL. It’s not as quick as a taxi, but it’s great for solo travelers.

Tips for a Smooth Arrival

  • Currency: Albania uses the Lek (ALL). While ATMs are available, it’s wise to have some cash on hand. All ATMs I’ve found in Tirana charge a minimum of 500 Lek (~5 Euro) service charge.
  • Language: Albanian is the official language, but English is understood in many places, especially in service sectors. A few basic phrases can go a long way.
  • Connectivity: Free Wi-Fi is typically available at the airport. Connect to “Free_Airport_WIFI” for updates or to inform your friends of your safe arrival.
  • Malls: Tirana has several main malls, with a few outside of the city. If you want to explore, you can catch a movie at QTU or TEG.
